Finding links in unlikely sources.

Some of the best ways to find links is to find out what top competitors are doing. Yahoo Site Explorer is a fantastic tool to do this, as it is the own search engine that gives accurate backlink data. From using this tool, I’ve managed to find a few places online that I wouldn’t have thought about to drop links.

One of them recently was on the firefox site – you can leave comments about useful firefox extensions. As the extension pages tend to attract incoming links, they also carry PR and significant traffic. This should be an important consideration when evaluating any link.

Does it carry both PR and existing web traffic? Remember that adding rel=”nofollow” to links renders them PRless, and is used to combat spam. The firefox site allows browser users (like you and me) to comment on the extensions – fortunately enough without implementing NoFollow.

Remember when being a web citizen, that it is extremely important to give back to the community. Provide a testimonial without being asked, or a review of a product you like, and you will gain links as a result. When you browse the web, always look out for the opportunity to gain a link. Never read a blog post you like without posting a comment. If you aren’t lazy when browsing the web doing so will reward your own site immensely.

This is not really a new idea of collecting links but i guess the whole situation is about to change. empowering the link strukture of your site is going to be a more subversive one in the future.
