Traditional link requests. A thing of the past?
Personally, I think link requests are moving towards being dead. I have yet to receive a single one, which wasn’t either spam, or full of falsehoods. As a search engine marketer, you should always check the authenticity of claims (such as pagerank), and traffic through the likes of Alexa.
That said, I have also yet to receive a link request which was on topic, would provide my visitors with an addition, useful non competitive resource. See where I’m going with this? If you want to play the game and play it well, then you are going to have to look thoroughly at people’s content, and consider writing something either as a blog or an article which complements their site. This can be tailored to suit their audience, or their products. The key is to make it a complete no brainer to link to, so that when they receive your email requesting a link, that 9 times out of ten you get a link back.
A small tip I have picked up on my travels is to appear to be female. Webmasters on the whole generally being 75% + male. Having some kind of SERP position for that female name also helps, linked to a flirty picture etc. Think fake social networking site that will receive number one placement on Google for the signature in your link request email. I also Google the persons name if I am going to do business with someone. You can take it for granted that the people whom you request links off will generally do the same. I’ve also spotted someone else who agrees that relationship building is the way to go. And if they think they are in with a chance…
