Grab your Twitter brand while you still can.
Prevent yourself getting TwitterSquatted.
Something that is becoming more and more apparent on Twitter is that major brands that are slow to adopt have the potential to get brand-jacked. I’ve seen numerous discussions on Twitter and on various blogs and news pieces that highlight the importance of grabbing your brands twitter account. Pat Phelan recently posted some Web 2.0 companies nominated for a crunchie award that still haven’t embraced the service. Amongst them, some haven’t even registered their names.
Whilst it is easy enough to revoke an account, if it is being sat on, such as in the case of Exxon Mobile, all too often the damage is done before someone can get around to fixing the problem. If Twitter is going to become a mainstream thing, and a service which is here to stay – which I think it is if domain registrations of late is anything to go on. Its never been more important to at least register your business name on the service.
My own personal account @webireland was the result of another person with the same name (@paulanthony) already using the account – my claim to rights with that one would fall into a much greyer area of the Twitter terms of service. But that was pretty much my own fault, as I neither understood, nor wanted to use the service at its inception. Don’t make the same mistake. Go and register the names you need now, even if you aren’t actively planning on using them at the minute, they may prove useful in the future.
