Paul: Thanks so much for responding. My situation might be a special case. The original source images are my images — they reside on Flickr. I’m just re-displaying the images in a different gallery of my own making on my own domain Then I use those images in posts on the blog. And those images link back to the gallery on my own domain (but the source images are of course on Flickr).

In this case, does it still make sense to link the images in the blog to the pages in the gallery? I’m inclined to think yes, it’s still beneficial to link, because the link goes to my own domain, rather than to Flickr.

I hope that twisted explanation makes sense. And if it does, I’d be happy to get your further opinion.

Hi Daniel,

Essentially, you are going to want Google to index the photos, which in both cases, they will do. However, you may find that people decide to hotlink to the photograph itself, rather than the post if the image is linked rather than just embedded. This may result in Google ranking the photograph URL itself – higher than the page URL. You probably want the former rather than the latter, so it’s probably best to just keep the image embedded, to encourage linking to your pages.

My wife and I run a travel blog and travel photo gallery. Currently, images in blog posts are linked to the image page in our photo gallery (rather than the image simply being embedded/unlinked). Is this bad SEO practice?
