Hi Rowan,
Thanks for your feedback. Skydrive are likely setting response headers their side to force the download, or the browser you are using doesn't have the plugin for Adobe installed. I'm guessing its the former rather than the latter though. Personally I'm all in favour of it forcing the download - the browser plugins typically slow my machine to a halt, and there's never really a warning that the file you are about to open is a PDF if you click it by accident, but then its a preference thing really.
I hadn't come across that with Dropbox, but sounds like a pretty big gotcha.
Thanks again for your thoughts,
Paul

A comment about Skydrive. It seems great for Microsoft Office docs, but if you share PDF files they are a real pain to open. There doesn't seem to be any way for users to view these other than downloading them to their computer first. Why they can't just open them in your browser when you clik on them like every other website in the world, I've no idea.

Just be aware that Dropbox doesn't currently support sharing of files in a read-only mode. If you've given anyone permission to see your files, they can just hit the delete key on the whole folder and Bam they've gone, from your computer too, and everyone else's whose sharing. Users have been clamouring for 2 years for this to be fixed but so far no news from the organisers of if or when this will be done.

These products all offer great services. I would always recommend Mozy, but it just all comes down to what best fits your needs. It's always a smart thing to purchase online backup for your files, they are reliable and in time of a computer crash you can be relived. Thank you for posting this up, it was very informative.
