Ok, you got me on the point of file attachments Paul, although I have never needed to send a file on my first communication with a company.
The drop down should always have an "Other" option, I have been frustrated by this myself, but that is just poor web design.
The only validation I do on the text filed of my web forms is to check for a URL, if one is found in the text, then I ask the user to prove they are human with a simple CAPTCHA. (doing a CAPTCHA for all comments would irritate users, but sometimes there is a valid reason for URL's so I can’t block them outright). Once again it’s a matter of designing the form correctly.

Have you ever managed to attach a file to a web form? Or include a photo / image?

I fail to see how different a web form is from an email, as long as the is a text box for your message. In showcases the web form ensures that the correct department will receive your message, and that you in turn get the information you want faster.

I'm glad you brought up the point about the contact e-mail. Too many times there are 40 selections for social media and sharing websites, as well as specific contact forms. You're still running a business and have to seem accessible.

Unless it's an artist site. I agree on music, sound and flash for business or research being a big turn off, but to expect an artist to have a drab, text ridden website is actually a turn off as well for me. They should exhibit that which they create, no?

I LOLed at the 1990 comment :) Totally agree on the music/video thing, although that's not guaranteed to make me bounce. A elaborate, Flash-animated intro is, though - can't be bothered, just want info, now. Great post!
