If you needed any further evidence of how the music industry continues to be shaped by the internet, Grammy award winning musician, Imogen Heap has announced that she plans to release a crowd sourced song.

The artist plans on taking a slower, but more collaborative approach to her music, collecting sounds from all over the world via a custom website where fans and musicians anywhere can contribute to the project.

It’s not the first time Heap has brought her art and fans together, back in November, a film collaborative with social entreupreneur Thomas Ermacora was created in little over a week from video submitted online. Her new press biography, was also created collaboratively via Twitter.

Released on the 28th of March, her first song  will not only involve the crowdsourcing of music, but the album as a whole will also be released in an unconventional way compared to her other pieces. Each song as it is created (every three months) will be released, and the album will be an evolving process, gradually revealing itself over the next three years.

A release party for all those parties who’ve taken part will also be held on the release date, and broadcast live via the web.

Imogen announced on her site:

“There’s so much going on in my life with touring, talks and tech that the choice to do this was both a necessity coupled with my passion for collaborative, spontaneous and creative projects. I also love the idea that the seeds of the song begins with the fans making a full circle when it’s experienced as a finished piece.

“The unknown nature of what it will sound like is so exciting to me. I often thrive on a deadline and creative limitations. I want to really put myself to the test and I’m going to have fun doing it!”
