From its inception, the web has always had appeal as an educational resource. Recognising the potential for remote learning, in 2002, the launch of OpenCourseWare at MIT helped propel the initiative into the spotlight, with many universities following suit and providing quality educational material available through the web. No longer is there an excuse for anyone with access to the web to say that education is outside of their reach.

This collection of links and applications highlights just the tip of the iceberg of educational resources that are available on the web. If you are interested in teaching yourself a new skill or learning a new topic indepth in your spare time, hopefully some of these will be of use.

University Material

Open Yale – Open Yale Courses provides free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University.

Open Courseware – Notre Dame University contribution to open courseware.

Open Courseware – MIT – Free lectures, exams and course material from MIT.

Open Courseware – University of California

Open Courseware – John Hopkins School of Public Health

UK Based University Search – All UK universities added to a custom search. Try a few queries such as Second World War, Games Programming – OER

Oxford University Mathematics OpenCourseWare: This project focuses on topics that range from introductions to pure mathematics and complex numbers to algebra, geometry and logic.

University of Nottingham: the University of Nottingham provides lectures on a variety of topics as well as learning resources.

Western Governors University: This project contains various courses listed under information technology and liberal arts.

Sofia – The Sofia initiative was launched by Foothill-De Anza Community College District in March of 2004. The goal of Sofia is to publish community college-level course content and make it freely accessible on the web to support teaching and learning.

BBC Online Learning – Some good resources for basic languages learning.

Directory of Open Access Journals – Free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals, covering all subjects and many languages

Merlot –  Find peer reviewed online teaching and learning materials.

Nixty – learning management platform that supports open education resources where teachers can earn an additional income through collaboration with student. Take courses from top instructors, schools, and universities. Study with other students.

OER Glue – a browser-based tool that allow students and teachers to collaborate together to create fully functional course material from around the web. Think of it as a curation tool for educators.

Peer to Peer University – Where people work together to learn a particular topic by completing tasks, assessing individual and group work, and providing constructive feedback.

Flat World Knowledge –  This is a university textbook publisher whose books are published under an open license, giving the ability to remix, edit and redistribute the content.

Tes Teaching resources  – An online space for teachers to share free learning materials including lesson plans, activities, games, teaching ideas and worksheets.

Technology Academy (FTA) – a joint initiative from several educational institutes in various countries. It aims to contribute to a society that permits all users to study, participate and build upon existing knowledge without restrictions.

  1. Check http://utubersity.com. The website presents the best educational videos available on Youtube and in the future from other sites as well, in an organized, easy to find way for you to watch and learn.

    They are classifying and tagging them in a way that enables you to find these materials easily and efficiently and not waste time browsing through pages of irrelevant search results. We also enhance your experience using other means such as recommending related videos, and so on.
